Q: What exactly does "Double Elimination" mean?
A "Double Elimination" tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. It stands in contrast to a "Single Elimination" tournament, in which only one defeat results in elimination. At Brave Jiu-Jitsu, the final of a "Double Elimination" tournament is set up for the possibility of two matches. Since the tournament is indeed double elimination, it is unfair to have the "W Bracket" Champion (Top Bracket) eliminated with its first loss. Therefore, while the "W Bracket Champion" needs to beat the "L Bracket Champion" only once to win the tournament, the "L Bracket Champion" must beat the Winners' Bracket champion twice.
Q: What's good about "Double Elimination"?
The "Double Elimination" format has some advantages over the "Single Elimination" format, most notably the fact that 3rd & 4th places can be determined without the use of a "Consolation" or "Classification" match involving two contestants who have already been eliminated from winning the tournament. In a single-elimination tournament with no byes, half of the competitors will be eliminated after their first game.
This can be disappointing to those who had to travel to the tournament and were only able to play once.
Brave's "Double Elimination" format overcomes this big shortfall by allowing a strong competitor which loses early to work their way through the "L Bracket" and progress to the later rounds, despite meeting the strongest competitor in the early rounds of competition.
Another big advantage of the "Double Elimination" format is the fact that ALL COMPETITORS will have at least two matches... GUARANTEED!
Q: Is there a weight "allowance" for weigh-in?
A: YES! THERE IS A 0.9 LBS. WEIGHT ALLOWANCE. For example, if the division is Up to 79 lbs. and a competitor weighed in at 79.9 lbs, the competitor is within the weight allowance (0.9 lbs). If the same competitor weighed in at 80.2 lbs., that is above the weight allowance and would be considered as "missing weight".
Q: Is weigh in WITH or WITHOUT the Gi?
A: Competitors ARE ALLOWED to weigh in without wearing their gi.
Q: How early should I arrive at the Brave Arena?
A: Be at least an hour and a half early.
Q: The doors open at what time?
🚪 DOORS OPEN AT 8:00 AM
Q: The weigh-ins begin at what time?
⚖️ WEIGH-IN START AT 8:00 AM
Q: What time do the matches start?
🥋 MATCHES START AT 9:00 AM
Q: What type of brackets does Brave Jiu-Jitsu use for kids tournaments?
A: Our Brave Kids Tournaments use double elimination brackets for brackets 4 or above. Any bracket with 3 competitors, we use the round-robin system. Any brackets with 2 competitors, the winner is determined by 2 wins out of 3 matches.
Q: Can competitors wear a rashguard under their gi?
A: YES! All competitors are allowed to wear a rashguard under their gi.
Q: Will the competitor be disqualified (DQ'd) if applies an illegal technique?
If a competitor applies an illegal technique, the referee will stop the match and undo the illegal move.
No penalty will be given and the match will be restarted by the referee after warning the competitor NOT TO DO IT AGAIN.
If it happens again, the referee will stop the match again, undo the illegal move, warn the coach or parent that if it happens again.... "one more time", the competitor will be disqualified immediately.
If it happens 3rd time, the competitor will be immediately disqualified (DQ'd)
